Man Found Shot in Medley Canal

Police investigating after officer finds gunshot victim in canal

Police are investigating after an officer found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in a Medley canal early Wednesday.

Medley Police spokesman Lt. Jack Young said the officer was on routine patrol when he spotted the victim in the canal on Northwest 106th Street just off Northwest 98th Court just before 1 a.m.

Young said the officer had found the victim's pickup truck near the canal's guard rail, which had its door open, engine running and radio on.

When the officer looked in the canal, he saw the victim clinging to the side.

Rescuers arrived and at first thought the man was dead but realized he was alive, Young said. The man was pulled from the canal and airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he's expected to live.

Police are still trying to piece together what happened.
