Giancarlo Gone: Marlins and Yankees Finalize Stanton Trade
Giancarlo Stanton officially became a member of the New York Yankees on Monday

Former Miami Marlins President David Sampson took a moment Saturday to speak with NBC 6’s Chris Fischer, discussing the developments in the Giancarlo Stanton trade.
The Miami Marlins and New York Yankees officially completed a trade involving Giancarlo Stanton on Monday.
The deal was pending until the completion of physicals, which have evidently now taken place. Stanton has some history with injuries and New York likely took extra time to fully look over his body. The deal was originally reported on Saturday morning.
"Thank you to the Marlins Organization & the amazing city of Miami! The city that adopted me at 17 with open arms. I’ve loved this place over the years and it will always be special to me," Stanton wrote on Facebook Monday. "I feel for u fans, you’ve stuck with me as we’ve shared some roller coaster years. I’ve always tried to be as professional as possible during the unprofessional, circus times there!"
Miami received infielder Starlin Castro, along with a pair of prospects from New York. Castro had a solid 2017 season and is signed for two more campaigns. Miami could look to move Castro, but it is possible the veteran remains in town. Castro could possibly bring the Marlins a couple of more minor league pieces and his services may seem unnecessary during a rebuild.
The prospects coming to the Marlins are Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers. Guzman is considered the better prospect in the deal and could arguably now be Miami's best piece in the farm system. The pitcher has an electric arm, but has not moved past Low-A ball as of yet. At only 21, Guzman has plenty of time to improve and move up in Miami's system.
Devers is only 18 and is an intriguing project. The infielder has time to fill out his frame and improve on his skill set. At this time, Devers is not considered a top prospect. In 2017, Devers played at the Rookie Ball level and slashed 245/.336/.342. It is likely that Miami will assign Devers to one of the lowest levels in the system to begin with.
The Yankees today announced that they have acquired outfielder @Giancarlo818 & cash considerations from the @Marlins in exchange for 2B Starlin Castro, minor league RHP Jorge Guzman & minor league INF Jose Devers. Stanton's introductory presser will be live on Yankees FB @ 2p.
The Marlins are sending $30 million to the Yankees as part of the deal. Stanton has an opt-out clause following the 2020 season however and that cash is contingent on it. If Stanton does not opt out, Miami will have to send the money to New York at that time. If the reigning Most Valuable Player utilizes that clause, the Marlins would be off the hook financially.
Major League Baseball's winter meetings could be the site of more moves for the Marlins. Those meetings began on Monday in Orlando.
