On Thursday workers in Miami-Dade County technically got back a 5 percent pay cut they conceded years ago – but Mayor Carlos Gimenez promised to veto county commissioners’ 8-5 decision. NBC 6’s Steve Litz reports.
Miami-Dade Commissioners voted to override a veto by Mayor Carlos Gimenez and restore workers' pay Tuesday.
In a 9-4 vote, the commission ended an unpopular pay concession for county workers and Jackson Health System employees, the Miami Herald reported.
Gimenez had twice vetoed the commission's vote to eliminate a 5 percent contribution of workers' base pay to group healthcare costs.
The mayor called the move "completely irresponsible" as he stormed out of the chambers, according to the Herald.
"I'm sure there’s going to be another round of layoffs," Gimenez said. "The commission can’t help themselves — they can’t do the right thing."
Police officers, transportation workers and general employees all agreed to contribute 5 percent to their health plans several years ago when the economy was in bad shape.
Now the contribution will go away, retroactive to Jan. 1.
