Police are now looking for a woman believed to be the mother of a child who was found wandering alone in Miramar over the weekend.

More than a day after the boy was found, Miramar Police said they were looking for Leila Cavett and that they were concerned for her safety and well-being. She was last seen driving a white Chevy 3500 (mid-to-late 90s model) with a maroon or red tailgate and a “Baby on Board” sign on the passenger window.

The Walker County Sheriff's Office in Jasper, Alabama, also called for the public to call Miramar Police if they knew about Cavett's whereabouts. Cavett's connection to Alabama was not made clear.

The child was found wandering near the 1860 block of Southwest 68th Avenue just before 9 a.m. Sunday.

Ebony Williams, a resident of a nearby apartment complex, said she spotted the toddler after returning from the store.

“I heard him crying when I got out of the truck, but when I approached him he wasn’t crying anymore,” Williams said.

After looking for the parents, she said she called police.

On Monday, Miramar Police canvassed the area looking for information about what led up to the boy’s discovery.

“A little boy is out, as a mother of two I can’t imagine,” said neighbor Lisette Sanchez.

Police in Miramar are still searching for a child's parents more than a day after he was found wandering alone. NBC 6's Sasha Jones reports.

Two women who say they are the woman's sisters told NBC 6 on Monday night through a video call that Cavett lives in Georgia and doesn't know anyone in Florida. Both women said Cavett's mother is expected to arrive in South Florida on Tuesday and they could be coming down as well in the coming days.

“It’s not out of character for her to go places, but it’s definitely out of character for her to be in Florida," said her sister, Gina Lewis. "We’re in Alabama, she lives in Georgia. If it’s not those two states, we don’t understand why she would be here, for sure.”

Lewis and her sister drove down from Alabama, arriving early Tuesday morning at police headquarters. They say they haven't seen Cavett since July 17, adding the boy's name is Kaymdyn and that he just turned 2 years old.

During a news conference earlier on Monday, Miramar Police spokesperson Tania Rues said so far no credible information has come in about the boy’s identity.

“Within an hour or two, three tops usually someone will come forward saying that they know who the child is or maybe parents will come forward, so it is quite unusual for it to have been more than 24 hours and still we don’t have any information to identify this child,” Rues said.

The child was placed in the care of child protective services.

“We’re definitely trying to stay positive,' Lewis added. "Kamdyn was in good health and everything when he was found. It’s all a little bit weird for sure”

According to police, the boy is between 2-3 years old, between 25-35 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
