A handcuffed prisoner who escaped custody in downtown Miami was caught after a large search Thursday night.

Homeland Security officers were transporting the prisoner from Miami International Airport when he escaped, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

Authorities set up a perimeter and later caught the suspect at Bayside. It's unknown why he was in custody to begin with.

“The suspect was in the custody on Homeland Security Investigations when he managed to flee from law enforcement," a spokesman for Homeland Security said in a statement. "He is currently in custody and being processed into the Federal Detention Center in Downtown Miami. We appreciate the assistance received from local law enforcement."

Students at nearby Miami-Dade College said security put them on lockdown and later evacuated them.
