Over the weekend, kids and shoppers at the mall in Sunrise will construct an 8-foot-tall Lego version of the guy who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Grant Olugin, 8, and his mother Liz talked about the event as it began Friday. Lego master model builder Dan Steininger said kids would learn something while they’re there.
Hundreds of Lego lovers young and old made their way down to Sawgrass Mills Friday to begin work on a giant SpongeBob SquarePants made entirely out of Lego bricks.
“It’s really cool,” said 8-year-old Grant Olugin.
“And they’re letting all the kids participate and build one little piece of it, and when they do they get a certificate, and then they actually get their name on it with SpongeBob, so it’s a lot of fun today,” said his mother, Liz Olugin.

The event includes giveaways, Lego trivia – and something educational.
“Don’t tell them that they’re learning something on a day off from school, OK, but they’re gonna learn something,” said Dan Steininger, a Lego master model builder.
The final, huge SpongeBob will be about four times the size of a Lego model that’s already completed at Sawgrass Mills.
“He’s going to literally be over the top of my hands right here. I’m pretty tall but he’s going to be taller than me,” Steininger said, wriggling his hands.
