Residents say Miami Beach condo is without air conditioning in common areas

Residents at Council Towers South on Collins Avenue said the air conditioning in the common areas of the building has been out for about a month.

Editor's note: We have made a correction to this story to clarify that it was the common areas and not the whole building without air conditioning. We have also included a statement from the Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation. Previously, only the city of Miami Beach had provided a statement.

The common areas of a Miami Beach condominium building for seniors have been without air conditioning for the past few weeks.

Residents at Council Towers South on Collins Avenue said the air conditioning in the common areas of the building have been out for about a month.

Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation, which runs the building, explained in a statement sent to NBC6 that the "cooling system failed on June 14th, EHDOC acted immediately, making $70,000 of emergency repairs and the AC in the apartments was restored on June 19th."

"Residents have cool air in all occupied units with temperatures averaging between 73-76 degrees, and we have been taking emergency measures to restore cool air in the common area hallways."

Resident Maria Ramirez Fernandez said when the AC was out inside apartments, management went door-to-door, offering to take residents to a hotel or provide fans or give them transportation to a relative's home.

"Their central A/C system is partially operating for the inside of units, but they are still repairing the system in the common areas," the city of Miami Beach said in a statement. "They have installed two portable HVAC units in the hallways of floors 3-12."

Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation is also working with the contractor and Florida Power and Light to install a new HVAC system by next week.
