Plantation Police said a man tried to kill himself after shooting another man to death in the parking lot of an apartment complex Tuesday.

The victim, 31-year-old David Lawrence Nelson II, was shot several times and left for dead in the parking lot, police said.

“About 6 o' clock, we got a report of shots fired at the Harbor Town complex, and units responded, and unfortunately, a 31-year-old white male was deceased as a result of the gunshots,” Detective Phil Toman said.

The suspect, described as a 47-year-old Latin male, was moments away from taking his own life when police discovered him, they said.

The suspect's wife approached officers and said her husband had taken pills and was lying on the floor in her apartment, a report said. Officers found the semi-conscious man matched the description given by witnesses of the shooter. A handgun was also found in the apartment.

Before the suspect, whose name has not been released, was found in a second-floor apartment, police launched an all-out search to find him.

Harbor Town residents were forced from their homes for hours, while K-9 units and search patrols combed the complex.

“It's nerve-wracking, you know?” neighbor Christina Frederic said. “I’m just coming home, I'm worried, I don't know what's going on. I'm looking at my phone, and I see that they're searching for a gunman.”
