One of the teens who was shot in a robbery in the parking lot of a popular pizzeria is the nephew of a Miami-Dade commissioner.
The shooting happened Monday at approximately 1:55 p.m. near Frankie's Pizza on Southwest 40th Street, according to Miami-Dade police. Two male suspects, ages 18 to 20, tried to rob the victims before shooting them.
Police are not identifying the victims. Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo Jr. said in a tweet Tuesday that his family wishes for privacy during this time.
"The unfortunate incident that took place yesterday involving my nephew is a personal family matter that is being handled privately," the statement read. "My family and I deeply value the outpouring support and prayers that we've received about my nephew."
The two teenage victims, ages 18 and 19, were hospitalized. One of them was shot in leg and the other was grazed in the face by a bullet. They are expected to recover.
The shooters are still at large. They fled the scene in a black SUV. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
