Samoa Drops Friday from Calendar

Blink in Samoa and you’ll miss Friday. The Pacific island plans to go directly from 11:59 p.m. Thursday through midnight to 12:01 a.m. Saturday, MSNBC reported. The move across the western side of the International Date Line is designed to make trading easier with partners New Zealand and Australia. "While it's Friday here, it's Saturday in New Zealand, and when we're at church Sunday, they're already conducting business in Sydney and Brisbane," explained Samoan Prime Minister Tuila’epa Sailele, according to Stuff.co.nz. American Samoa, about 100 miles east, will not be making the switch. That means if you’re willing to make the hour-long flight between both islands, you can celebrate New Year’s Eve twice.
