Miami Dolphins' Jonathan Martin Has “Gone AWOL”: Report

Right tackle has not been with the team for days after lunchroom joke gone awry

Miami Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has not been practicing with the team this week and has "gone AWOL," according to one report.

Via NBCSports' ProFootballTalk, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Wednesday that Martin walked out on the team after an incident in the Dolphins' cafeteria earlier this week. Apparently, some of his teammates jokingly refused to sit with him at lunch. In response, Martin "flipped out, smashed a food tray on the ground, took off, and they haven't seen him since."

Glazer also reported that Martin has gone into a treatment facility, but it is unknown what type of treatment he is receiving.

NFL.com's Jeff Darlington corroborated the report, tweeting Wednesday that Martin left team facilities on Monday to seek outside assistance following an "emotional breakdown."

The second-year Martin is listed as questionable in the injury report for Miami's game against Cincinnati Thursday night, but due to an undisclosed illness. Miami head coach Joe Philbin did not discuss Martin when asked at his press conference Wednesday, citing his policy of only discussing players that have practiced that day.

Martin was the Dolphins' second-round draft pick in 2012. He started all 16 games last year and the first seven games of this season. Martin slid over to the left side of the line this year following the departure of left tackle Jake Long via free agency this summer, but moved back to right tackle when the Dolphins acquired Bryant McKinnie last week.

Martin has struggled at times this season, and Miami's offense as a whole has given up a whopping 32 quarterback sacks through the first seven games of the season.
