U.S. Attorney's Tips on How Tax Preparers Can Protect Themselves From Identity Thieves

U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer says there are a number of steps tax preparers can take to protect themselves against identity thieves who file fraudulent tax returns. Topping the list, Ferrer advises, “File your taxes as early as possible. By doing that, you beat the identity thief to the punch.” He also says residents should shred their sensitive personal information before throwing it in the trash, and keep personal and bank information safe in their houses.
