Authorities Investigate Explosion at Fort Lauderdale Home

No one injured in incident at duplex

Authorities are investigating after an explosive device was thrown at a Fort Lauderdale home Monday morning.

The incident happened shortly before 6 a.m. at a duplex in the 800 block of Southwest 14th Street.

Police say an explosive device went off in a flowerbed right outside the home as a woman slept on a couch just a few feet away.

"This was an extremely powerful device, it was able to shatter not only the window it was aimed at, the other windows surrounding it as well," Fort Lauderdale Police spokesman Det. Travis Mandell said. "When you walk inside you can see that glass has been sent clear across the room."

As she clutched her 2-year-old son, Lauren Graham recounted the Monday morning she and her family will never forget.

"I looked up, and there was smoke everywhere, there was a flash of light ... You couldn't see. I didn't know if there was another bomb that was going to go off," Graham said.

She lives there with her son and parents, but no one was injured from the blast.

Graham said the device exploded just 5 feet away from her son, however.

"We're thankful that no one was injured, I mean there was a small child inside when this explosive detonated," Mandell said.

Neighbors said they heard a loud boom at the duplex, which had visible smoke damage and at least three broken windows.

"There was this boom and this jolt and everything shook and we got up and went outside and the car alarms were all going off and we saw smoke going at the neighbor's house," witness Petra Wagnon said.

Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue investigators were at the scene throughout Monday morning to investigate the incident. They said they did not find an explosive device but did turn up wires which are believed to be part of that device.

Authorities said they have a person of interest they want to question.

"I don't know who would do something like this – a sick person," Graham said.
