Palmetto Expressway Exit Getting a Makeover

A major exit is getting a makeover this weekend on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade.

Starting Sunday afternoon, northbound drivers headed for Northwest 25th Street will exit half a mile sooner, just as they pass under State Road 836.

The route to Northwest 25th street is a popular one for traffic to Doral and cargo shipments to Miami International Airport.

The old exit will close Friday night to allow crews to pave the new ramp, put up barriers and put down stripes, all in time for Sunday's opening.

Flashing messages will alert drivers to the change, but if you miss the new exit, "don't panic," said Florida Department of Transportation spokesman Oscar Gonzalez. "You can get off at 36th street."

It's all part of a massive improvement project on the State Road 836 and State Road 826 expressways expected to finish in the fall of 2015.
