I Killed Her, I Killed Her: Suspect

Jose Antonio Pupo Gonzalez was hit by a car trying to run from police across the Palmetto

The suspect in a Hialeah Homicide Wednesday afternoon has been transported to a hospital after being hit by a car.

Jose Antonio Pupo Gonzalez, 37, was attempting to cross the Palmetto Expressway when he was hit in the southbound lane by a minivan.

Hialeah Police were searching for Gonzalez after his wife, 31-year-old Yoanys Martinez-Avila, was found dead inside her apartment at 6565 West 2nd Court.

"We started getting calls a little bit after 12 today, some third-party information that this gentleman, Jose Antonio Pupo Gonzalez, may have killed his wife here at this location," said Carl Zogby, with the Hialeah Police Department.

According to the police, they received information that the Gonzalez had threatened to kill Martinez-Avila and her children. When police arrived at the apartment building at 6565 W Second Court, they found her dead.

The woman's children were found safe, her 13-year-old still at school and the four-year-old at a nearby babysitter's home.

Police said the 4-year-old witnessed the murder. They also said he contacted family and friends to let them know what he did.

"He called me on the phone and said 'I killed her, I killed her,'" friend Manuel Pena said. Gonzalez allegedly told Pena to have the two children sent back to Cuba.

A sighting of Gonzalez at the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce has police and SWAT rushing residents out of the building to safety.

"While we were doing a search of the building, one of our detectives located the subject here on West 20th Ave. attempting to open doors to vehicles that were parked on the side of the road," said Det. Eddie Rodriguez, with the Hialeah PD.

Immediately a foot chase began, but the suspect's run from the law was short lived. As Gonzalez tried to cross the Palmetto Expressway, he was struck by a vehicle, but survived.
