Chili's Waitress Arrested for Illegal Credit Card Scanner: Cops

Pompano Beach woman charged with possession of a scanning device, officials said

A waitress at Chili’s was arrested after authorities discovered she was using an illegal credit card scanner, the Coral Springs Police Department said.

Germithe Geffrard, 23, of Pompano Beach, was charged with possession of a scanning device, according to a release.

Police said the Chili’s located at 1650 University Drive in Coral Springs received several complaints from customers about fraudulent activities on their credit cards between February and April.

The activities seemed to coincide with the days Geffrard worked as a waitress officials said.

The loss prevention department from Chili’s discovered Geffrard would scan customers’ credit cards to pay for their bill but would then scan the cards through an illegal scanner that would store the credit card information, the report said.

Geffrard admitted she would scan the cards three times a day and then give the scanner to another person that would use the information to make illegal purchases, according to authorities.

"Unfortunately, a food server at Chili’s Coral Springs location was taken into custody for purportedly using a hand-held scanning device to capture guests' credit card numbers. This was an isolated incident involving one employee. Chili’s is cooperating fully with authorities on their investigation, and this food server’s employment ended when we learned of this conduct," a statement released by Chili's said. "The employee did not obtain credit card numbers using the corporate or local restaurant computer system and the security of these systems was not compromised."

Geffrard was released May 1 on her own recognizance, jail officials said.

It was not immediately known if she had an attorney.
