Divers Compete in Key West Wreck Race

Divers use sunken ship as underwater race track Sunday

Using diver propulsion vehicles, divers competed in the third annual Underwater Grand Prix off of the Florida Keys Sunday.

The divers raced an the underwater track created by a 523-foot-long ship that was sunk as an artificial reef, the Florida Keys News Bureau reported.

Rick Iossi of Boca Raton was named the event's grand champion and placed first, the Bureau said.

Lisa Mongy of Miami placed first in the expedition class B and raced with a Pegasus Thruster.

Pat Gaughan of Fort Lauderdale won in the recreation class and raced with a Torpedo 2500.

The artificial reef, the Vandenberg, was formerly a military troop transport and missile tracking ship that was sunk in 2009.
