Some Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students are helping boost the interest of local fifth graders in science, technology, engineering and math fields, commonly called STEM.
The Embry-Riddle Honors Student Association used to judge science fairs at Daytona Beach area schools.
Association president Clare Jenkins told The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1NgPx8X ) that interest in the events held mostly at high schools was too tepid.
So the group recently decided to focus on fifth graders. Two weeks ago, students got a lesson on the laws of motion as defined by Sir Isaac Newton. On Thursday, the lessons came to life with a rocket launch on a field at the Ormond Beach school.
The Embry-Riddle students are hoping to inspire the children's interest in STEM fields before they get to middle school.
