The reward for information in the killing of over a dozen horses in South Florida is now up to $5,000.

The Humane Society of the United States doubled the reward yesterday in the hopes of finding the person or persons responsible for slaughtering at least 18 horses throughout Miami-Dade county in the past six months.

The horses have been killed and cut apart, their bodies left on roadsides or in stalls or fields for their owners to find. Police believe black market flesh sellers are targeting the horses, whose meat sells for as much as $20 per pound.

The sale of horse meat is illegal in the United States, but is considered a delicacy in other countries.

Police have yet to nab any suspects, and frightened horse owners have begun to take precautions to keep their pets safe, installing cameras and holding all-night patrols of their farms.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
