House Set Ablaze, Person Shot During Eviction

Person hospitalized after eviction in Pembroke Pines goes awry

An attempt to serve an eviction notice got out of hand in Pembroke Pines Friday morning, when the home was set on fire and a man was shot, police said.

The situation unfolded in the 700 block of Southwest 107th Avenue as Broward Sheriff's Office civil deputies were serving the eviction notice around 11 a.m.

Police say the man inside the home refused to come out, and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and Pembroke Pines Police were called for backup.

When the home started to catch fire, firefighters also were called to the scene.

Police say that an altercation between the man and officers broke out, with at least one officer firing his weapon and hitting the man several times.

Fire officials said the unidentified 52-year-old man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital as a trauma alert.

A neighbor said she heard someone knock on the door several times before several shots were fired. She said she also smelled gasoline before she ran from the area with her four children.
