Seijas Disses Mayor Before Recall Election

Seijas denounced Mayor Alvarez as recall election looms

So much for birds of a feather flocking together.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas has decided that if she is going down, it won't be because she sided with fellow recall candidate Mayor Carlos Alvarez.

In a statement Thursday, Seijas denounced a recent Alvarez decision to pay a dozen county transit employees accused of taking time off to do some political campaigning.

The issue itself isn't a major controversy, but it is telling that Seijas has taken the opportunity to distance herself from Alvarez as early voting has begun in the recall effort. The election is March 15.

"This decision is entirely unacceptable. This is an insult to the taxpayers of Miami-Dade County," Seijas said in a statement. "I cannot imagine a more blatant abuse of taxpayer dollars."

Another translation might be, "I'm not the bad guy. This guy is. Please don't take your anger out on me at the polls!"

Seijas even went so far as to say that the State Attorney's Office should investigate the alleged incident. It's unclear if she was wearing a Norman Braman T-shirt as she penned her statement.

Both Seijas and Alvarez are the targets of a recall effort by county voters who think it's time for both officials to go. Alvarez has been the main attraction thanks to Braman, who paints the mayor as a tax-hiking dictator.

A recall petition was also successful against Seijas, who has been the representative for Hialeah and Miami Lakes for 18 years.
