Canes Defy Naysayers in Sooner Upset

Canes move from 17th to 11th in polls

The Miami Hurricanes were supposed to be 0-4 by now. You know how accurate those preseason pundits can be.

But after playing four ranked teams in what has to be one of the toughest schedules in the nation, the Canes are sitting at a comfortable 3-1 after upsetting the Oklahoma Sooners 21-20 at Landshark Stadium in front of 61,790 screaming fans.

Yes, there is still that frustrating loss in Blackburg that left them drenched in rain and humiliation.

But true winners rebound after such defeats. True winners rebound after dismal first halves. True winners prove the pundits wrong.

That is exactly what they did Saturday night after falling behind 10-7 in the first half.

It was a shoddy first half, especially with sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris throwing two interceptions in the opening minutes of the game.

But what did he do? He walked back to the sidelines and laughed.

We’re glad he found it funny because most of us weren’t laughing at the time.

But he ended up throwing three touchdown passes, allowing the 17th ranked Canes to upset the 8th ranked Sooners in the nationally televised game.

It was just two years ago that the Sooners trounced the Hurricanes 51-13 in an embarrassing defeat that still stings for some players.

Running back Javarris James remembers that game well, although he would like to forget. In the 2007 game, he fumbled the ball that resulted in a 61-yard touchdown run.

On Saturday, he rushed for a career-high 150 yards, including 38 yards in the final four minutes as the Canes ran out the clock. And this against one of the best run defenses in the country.

Then there was tight end Jimmy Graham who dropped two crucial passes in the loss against Virginia Tech. He ended up catching an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first half when they were down 10-0.

Next week the Canes play against Florida A&M, which is renowned more for its Marching 100 band than for its football.
