Lisa Chavarria joined the NBC 5 team as a general assignment reporter in June of 2017.
Prior to joining NBC 5, Lisa spent 5 years as a reporter and fill-in anchor at the FOX affiliate in Chicago.
Chavarria came back to Chicago after spending several years in newsrooms around the country. She started her career at WPBN-TV in Traverse City, Michigan. She then worked for WTVF-TV in Nashville and KHOU-TV in Houston.
Lisa is no stranger to the city. She is originally from the south side of Chicago, but grew up in west suburban, Berwyn.
She graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. Returning to NBC Tower feels like a true homecoming as she interned there with the NBC News bureau.
Chavarria enjoys running along the lakefront, so much in fact, she documented training for her first marathon. She became an official finisher of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2018. She will make another attempt, this time raising money and awareness for the American Diabetes Association. It's a cause dear to her as her mother has Type 2 diabetes. She also lost her grandfather to complications from the same condition.
Chavarria is also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
She lives in the city with her husband, Ben and their Yorkie, Jordan.
