Canes Lose LB Buchanan, Get DT Robinson Back

Miami's depth gets even thinner at defense following a blowout loss to Kansas State

Miami Hurricanes LB Ramon Buchanan will miss the remainder of the 2012 season with a right knee injury, coach Al Golden said Sunday. Buchanan hurt his knee during the Canes' loss at Kansas State on Saturday.

According to Golden, Buchanan's knee got caught underneath his body during a play, "and then a pile fell backwards on him." Buchanan recorded 10 tackles through two games, and through the four previous seasons at UM, he had 107 tackles (14 for loss) with one interception. Buchanan also missed most of 2011 due to an injury of the same knee.

Golden also said safety Vaughn Telemaque is out for this week's game against Bethune-Cookman with a left knee injury, while receiver Allen Hurns is questionable after sustaining a concussion against Kansas State on Saturday. Hurns is under observation, having experienced a similar injury during training camp.

Buchanan and Telemaque continued to play after getting hurt. Golden said he was unaware of the extent of both injuries until Sunday. Buchanan is a fifth-year senior whose 2011 season was also cut short by a knee injury.

Golden said he is unsure whether Buchanan and the university will seek a medical redshirt from the NCAA. Doing so would potentially grant him a sixth year of eligibility in 2013.

"That's something we're looking into. But I'd hate to comment without knowing," Golden said. "I'm terribly upset for the young man. He's put in a lot into it. So that's tough."

Golden said juniors Jimmy Gaines and Tyrone Cornileus will compete for Buchanan's starting spot.

"Our team got significantly younger today because of the loss of Telemaque, the long-term loss of Buchanan, and because of the loss of Hurns, which looks to be in the short-term," Golden said. "It's a loss nonetheless and we have to pick it up and move forward. One of the ways you do that is you leave the game in Manhattan."

Golden also said DT Luther Robinson will return to the team Monday after serving a suspension for "detrimental conduct." He did not make the trip to Kansas State over the weekend.
