Partially Naked Partygoer, Hit By Taxi Driver, Beats Good Samaritans: Police

Police said stun guns weren't enough to subdue the Texas man, who sent 3 of them to the hospital

A partially naked partygoer who was injured by a hit-and-run taxi driver on North Bayshore Drive early Saturday turned on Good Samaritans who tried to give him aid, beating them, Miami Police said.

Police said they went to the 1800 block of North Bayshore Drive at about 5:40 a.m. after learning through 911 calls that the angry crash victim had begun beating those attempting to help him.

But Evan Oberfelder, 23, didn’t stop there, police said. When several officers arrived, the already-bloodied Texan, who was "struggling" with a would-be Good Samaritan, said "You called the police? I hate the police!" according to an arrest report.

That victim said that after he tried to aid Oberfelder, he punched him in the face and the back of his head. The man tried to move away, but Oberfelder attacked him with his hands and feet, kicking him in the groin, and then forcibly restrained him, according to police.

The man defended himself by punching back at Oberfelder, who is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weights 215 pounds, police said.

When officers arrived, Oberfelder tried to evade them by jumping on top of one of their cars, then jumped off it and brandished his fists, police said.

The officers said they were forced to use stun guns on the combative partygoer, but those proved "ultimately ineffective" in subduing him. During their tussle, Oberfelder took a baton from one officer and struck her with it on her right arm, police said.

That officer, who had a fractured arm and head injuries, was one of three who were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, according to police. They were later discharged.

An additional 10 officers “were treated on the scene for exposure to blood,” police said.

Oberfelder was finally taken into custody, and Miami Fire-Rescue personnel "were forced to sedate" him, police said. He was also taken to Ryder, where he remains in critical condition due to the injuries he received from the taxi, whose driver remains at large, police said.

Oberfelder, who is from Irving, Texas, was charged with felony battery, false imprisonment, aggravated battery on a police officer, resisting arrest with violence and criminal mischief, police said, and is in the custody of Miami-Dade Corrections at the hospital.

Police said detectives are looking for a mid-size yellow taxi van that fled from the scene with passengers inside.

Miami Police urge anyone with information on this incident to call their homicide unit at 305-603-6350, or call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Separately, police said over a dozen arrests were made in connection with the first night of festivities for the Ultra Music Festival, most of them for drug charges.
