Teen Accused of Hoax Threats to Coral Gables Senior High Staying in Custody

A judge ordered a student accused of making hoax threats against Coral Gables Senior High School to remain in custody Wednesday as the teen's attorney said bullying may have played a part in the incident.

The teen didn't attend Wednesday's hearing before Judge Orlando Prescott, but his parents were there on his behalf. He's charged with two counts of written threats and two counts of filing a false report.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the student created fake accounts on Gmail in other students' names to make the hoax threats.

The teen's defense attorneys argued that he's at the top of his class and has no history of trouble but Prescott wasn't impressed with the good grades or clean record.

"I see the grades, they're exemplary, grades are exemplary but it's the actions before the court that are driving this bus, not his exemplary school record," Prescott said.

Defense attorneys entered a not guilty plea and said the student was being bullied, and that may be a factor in the incident.

The teen's trial was scheduled for July 13.
