‘Uncertainty Everyday': Brother Seeks Answers in 2016 Disappearance of Sister, Niece

Liliana Moreno and her 8-year-old daughter Daniela were last seen in May of 2016 before they vanished without a trace

Nearly three years after a South Florida mother and her young daughter disappeared, family members are still searching for answers.

Liliana Moreno and her 8-year-old daughter Daniela were last seen in May of 2016 before they vanished without a trace.

In June 2016, a search was launched with dogs and dozens of volunteers tracking through swampy brush near their Doral home and in a nearby lake, but no signs of the family were found.

Liliana's brother, Eduardo Moreno, moved to South Florida after their disappearances, and continues to search for them.

"Three years ago have been a mess and we don't know what happened with my sister and my niece so I would like to take more information and hope soon that I know what happened," he said on Friday. "I feel so bad I want to know what happened with my sister and my niece so hard for me but you don’t know anything about them."

Liliana and her daughter were last seen on May 30, 2016, off Okeechobee Road in Hialeah Gardens. Police first suspected foul play following a search of Moreno’s apartment. Her purse, keys and wallet were left inside while the front door was locked and her car was in the parking lot.

After the disappearances, investigators said Daniela’s father, Gustavo Castano, was a person of interest. Castano made news when he was hospitalized after stabbing himself in a parking lot just days after the disappearance was reported. He was questioned by detectives but never charged.

"He knows more and he wants to stay away from this, I don’t know why," Eduardo Moreno said.

The family is hoping someone who knows something will still come forward.

"I just ask the community not to forget, not to forget Liliana and Daniela. Just because three years have gone by that you move on with your life, it's in the past now, to remember the pain the families feel, that uncertainty everyday," Eduardo Moreno said. "I think that she's still alive. I want to hug my niece and my sister, we have many plans we want to do in family. We miss them."
