FPL Subcontractor Electrified by Power Pole or Lightning: Officials

"Miraculously, the patient suffered no major injuries"

A Florida Power & Light subcontractor was electrified on Monday and officials are attempting to determine whether it was from a power pole or a lightning strike, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue.

Officials said the 27-year-old man who works as an FPL subcontractor with PIKE was transported to Hollywood's Memorial Regional Hospital, where he will be kept overnight for observation.

The incident happened in the area of Stirling Road and N. Lake Boulevard in Cooper City.

"Miraculously, the patient suffered no major injuries and was talking to paramedics throughout the entire transport," the agency said in a statement. "It is still unknown if the patient was electrified from an electrical arc from the power pole while the man was up in the utility bucket, or if he was electrified by a nearby lightning strike as a storm was passing through the area around the same time."

Another worker on the scene said he was burned by debris at the time of the incident, the agency said.
