Nearly eight decades after entering the military and serving his country during World War II, a Palm Beach County man can now call himself a high school graduate.
Robert “Sam” Wasson entered the military at the age of 16, quitting high school and serving on five submarine shifts over the course of a decade as a cook.
While admitting they were some of the best times of his life, the Lake Worth Beach resident told NBC affiliate WPTV-TV that something was missing even at the age of 94 – a dream that had come to life after attending football games at nearby Wellington High School.
“I said, 'You know something, I think I’m going to graduate with this class,'” he said.
After getting some help from faculty members at the school with the courses he had remaining, Wasson became the oldest member of the school’s Class of 2019 – but has said his educational path has come to an end.
“I tell you two things I’m not going to do: I’m not going to go to college and I’m not looking for a job,” he said with a laugh. “Everything else is open.”
