Man Charged with Kidnapping in West Palm Beach

A 24-year-old man allegedly kidnapped his son, as the infant dangled like a rag doll in his arms, police said

A West Palm Beach man was arrested Tuesday after he kidnapped his baby and held him from his collar like a “rag doll,” officials said.

Terrance Jermaine Coleman, 24, faces multiple charges including burglary with assault, child infliction of physical or mental harm and kidnapping, according to his arrest affidavit.

Officials said Coleman arrived at the residence of the baby’s mother Tuesday and banged on the windows repeatedly, asking for the infant. Coleman and the woman have one child together, an infant son, according to authorities.

The report said he began to verbally assault the mother and threatened her, saying "If you don't open the door, it will be worse for you." The mother told him to stop banging on the window, since her own daughter was sitting on the high chair directly in front it, officials said.

Coleman, though, was banging on the window with such force, he shattered it with his right arm and began bleeding profusely, the report said. Police said Coleman then pulled the woman’s other child through the broken window, bruising the child’s arms.

According to the arrest report, the victim opened the front door in fear of the safety of her kidnapped daughter. She ran to the back of her apartment and onto the sofa, with both children in her arms, police said.

Coleman head-butted the mother and injured her between the eyes, the report said. He then ran off with his infant, despite his own injuries, according to police.

According to witnesses, the infant was dangling and swinging back and forth like a rag doll in Coleman's arms as he tried to get into a silver vehicle in a West Palm Beach parking lot.

Police arrived on scene and ordered Coleman to put the down the infant, but when he refused, an officer was forced to draw his gun, authorities said.

Coleman set the baby down on the passenger’s seat and turned himself in, the report said.

No serious injuries were found on the baby, police said.

Coleman remains at the Palm Beach County Jail with a total of $135,000 bond, jail records show. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.
