Orlando Surgeon Posts Emotional Message, Photo Following Mass Shooting

What to Know

  • One of the surgeons who dealt with dozens of victims of the Orlando Mass Shooting posted an emotional message on Facebook.
  • Dr. Joshua Corsa also posted a photo of his shoes, covered in blood, that he has been wearing since Sunday's incident.

In the days since the Orlando mass shooting that claimed 49 lives and sent over 50 more to area hospitals, one surgeon who was in the trenches dealing with those injured is sharing an emotional moment on social media.

Dr. Joshua Corsa, a member of the staff at Orlando Regional Medical Center, posted a photo on Facebook of the blood stained shoes he was wearing while performing dozens of operations over the past two days. The photo has gone viral as has the message he wrote, reading in part:

“On these shoes, soaked between its fibers, is the blood of 54 innocent human beings,” Sousa wrote. ”I don't know which were straight, which were gay, which were black, or which were hispanic. What I do know is that they came to us in wave upon wave of suffering, screaming, and death.”

“When the last patient leaves our hospital, I will take them off, and I will keep them in my office. I want to see them in front of me every time I go to work. For on June 12, after the worst of humanity reared its evil head, I saw the best of humanity of come fighting right back. I never want to forget that night.”

The hospital is located just blocks north of the Pulse nightclub, where Omar Mateen opened fire in the early hours of Sunday morning. Dozens of victims remain hospitalized.
