Marlins Go Back to the Future, Call Up Maybin

Cameron Maybin gets the call, again, from the Marlins

The time is now, again, for Cameron Maybin.

The ultra-talented, under-performing outfielder was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans to take over for Cody Ross in center field by the Marlins.

The move made Tuesday before the Marlins faced the New York Mets comes two days after Florida let Ross go to the San Francisco Giants on a waiver claim. Ross was the third-highest paid player on the cost-conscious club with a salary of $4.45 million.

Maybin is slated to bat seventh but Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez sees him taking over the leadoff spot by the end of the week. he batted leadoff some at the beginning of the season when he struggled to a .225 average with five homers and 19 RBIs in 51 games.

Then the team sent Maybin down to Triple-A where he began to tear the cover off the ball. Maybin hit .338 this year in Triple-A with four homers and 23 RBIs in 33 games.

Maybin has been less than spectacular since the team acquired him in a deal from the Detroit Tigers in 2008, when he was considered a five-tool player with tremendous upside. Of course, that was only on paper.

On the field, Maybin has shown little discipline at the plate, often swinging and missing than making contact and using his speed to get on base.
