Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue battled a blaze Friday at a Texaco gas station that was in the process of being demolished.

Authorities responded to the fire at 10:45 a.m. with 15 units to the gas station, located at 1700 Cordova Drive. Parts of 17th Street and Cordova Drive were closed because of the situation.

A worker told authorities that he was using a blow torch to remove bolts on the wheel guide rails of an old car wash, when the torch ignited a car wash brush. He said the fire spread fast.

The man lost his cell phone and tools as he escaped. He was the only person at the gas station.

Part of the structure's roof collapsed and it was gutted because of the fire.
