Florida Unemployed Could Fill Their Own State

Over 1 million people were unemployed last month

Being unemployed is becoming the hip new trend in Florida.

Last month's unemployment numbers totaled over 1 million for the first time in 34 years,.l But while that is alarming, check this stat out.

Nearly 1,087,000 workers were searching for a paycheck in Florida in December, which is more than Rhode Island's 2008 population of 1,050,788. How depressing is that when you can send your downtrodden and job-deprived to take over another state?

"We wish it were going in the other direction, obviously," said Gov. Charlie Crist, in the understatement of the new year.

December was truly the season for giving - pink slips. The 11.8 percent jobless rate was among tops in the nation, which is why Crist says he is keeping his eyes on the ball. Baseball that is.

"That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to talking about at least the possibility of the Chicago Cubs coming," said Crist, who is fighting to get the Cubs to come to Florida for spring training.

Ironically, Crist added to that unemployment number several times when he suspended Miami commissioners Michelle Spence-Jones (twice), Angel Gonzalez and a hand full of other South Florida politicians for being bad public stewards.

Maybe they could lead the exodus to Brokeville, the nation's 51st state.
