A husband and wife who own and operate a North Miami gas station were both shot last night during a brazen robbery shortly after they closed up shop, police said.

Police said the two were shot shortly after 10 p.m. at the station on the 1600 block of NE 123rd St., leaving the husband in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

His wife was treated and released. Neither of the victim's names were released.

A friend of the couple said the pair have been a neighborhood fixture for awhile.

"They've owned the station for a long time, they've been here a long time. They're hardworking people," said Scott McDonald.

The robbers got away but police say they're interviewing the husband and wife and looking at surveillance video for clues, and that the thugs may have left some personal items behind at the scene.

"We've all been worried, you know, about the situation here and how dangerous it is, but you know, they're entrepenuers, they're hardworking and this really shouldn't have happened," McDonald said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
