Miami Officially in the Running for Future World Cup

You got nothin' on us, Qatar

Miami officially has a one in 18 chance of scoring (maybe a little pun intended) the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Today the MIAMI Host City Bid Committee announced that the USA Bid Committee formally submitted the United States bid during a ceremony at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

A petition to bring the games here has been online for a while now, boasting such attractions as South Beach and, um, Metro Zoo.

"Featuring palm trees, models, and superstars," the site goes onto say, "our luxurious hotels, trendy eateries and fabulous shops are the place to be."

Perhaps they might want to add that we are also not so fat anymore.

If chosen, the site of the games would be Sun Life stadium, or whatever it will be called by then (the petition site still refers to it as "Landshark"). At 80,240 seats, it met 80,000 minimum requirement to host the opening and final matches.

Of course, in order to bring the Cup here, first the U.S. has to beat out eight other countries. We think we've got Netherlands-Belgium shaking in their cleats, but Russia might be tough to beat, what with their endless vodka VIP party sponsorship possibilities.

But committee chairman and commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz said that today the city took another important step toward hosting the big event.

"We are proud of the effort of our committee, the USA Bid Committee, our elected officials and everyone in this community that have worked so hard to support the bid, it is a major accomplishment."
