Teen Shot by Friend Was Home to Avoid Bullies: Family

One teen accidentially shoots his friend in the head while playing with gun

A boy accidentally shot in the head by his friend Wednesday in Hollywood has died.

The victim, 13-year-old Daniel Torres, was rushed to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital but couldn't not overcome the gunshot wound to his forehead.

Police questioned the 14-year-old boy who shot his friend. Both are students from Apollo Middle School.

The teens appeared to be playing with a gun in the boy's backyard when it went off, hitting the friend in the forehead. Police have not said if the shooter's parents were home. The incident happened around 2 p.m.

Police said the shooting appeared accidental.

On Thursday, Torres' family spoke out, saying that the teen had stayed home from school that day because he was afraid of getting beat up at school.

"He was being bullied," Torres' cousin, who identified herself only as Aida, told the Sun-Sentinel. "He didn't want to go to school because they were going to beat him up."

A school board official, who spoke with the principal at Apollo, said no one from Torres' family had spoken to anyone at the school about the bullying.

According to the school board, it was the first day this year that Torres has been absent.

Late Wednesday night, detectives found the 9mm handgun used in the shooting during a search warrant of the 14-year-old's home. No charges have been filed in the case.

Family and neighbors said the two boys were close friends.
