15 Mayors in Miami-Dade Biking to Work

More than a dozen mayors in Miami-Dade County decided to leave their cars behind and rode their bicycles to work.

The mayors took part in the "Bike305 Bike to Work Day" on Thursday, including Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Residents are also encouraged to do the same by combining their bike ride with public transportation to get to work.

The 15 mayors are promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, while encouraging residents to bike to parks, attractions, shops and events throughout the year.

"What we're trying to do with events like this is to say look, it's not that bad," organizer Sue Kawalerski said. "If Mayor Gimenez can go from his house here it says he's not afraid to ride.

Bike305 includes 15 municipal mayors and parks departments from Coral Gables, Cutler Bay, Doral, Homestead, Key Biscayne, Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Miami Shores, North Miami, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach and Surfside.

"Great way to wake up and do something active before work, and bonding an team-building with co-workers," participant Carlos Pichardo said.
