9 Possible Cuban Migrants Wash Ashore Key Biscayne: Police

Fire rescue said the men appeared to be in good condition

Nine men who appear to be Cuban migrants washed ashore in Key Biscayne Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The men made it to shore by the Mar-Azul condominiums at 600 Grapetree Drive, Key Biscayne Police said.

Officials said the men were at sea for four days, surviving four nasty storms and waves that were 10 to 13 feet high. They ran out of gas quickly and ended up rowing most of the way. When they saw land, they gave their makeshift engine one more try and it started, giving them the final push to reach land.

Witnesses said they could see smoke coming from the boat and hear cheers coming from the men as they reached the shore.

Fire Rescue responded to treat the men, who all appeared to be in good condition. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol were called to the scene to investigate.

Under the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy, most Cuban migrants who reach U.S. shores are allowed to stay.
