Baby Sea Turtles Washed Ashore After Hurricane Matthew Being Cared For at Florida Zoo

About 75 baby sea turtles washed ashore by waves from Hurricane Nicole are recovering at a Florida zoo.

Brevard Zoo sea turtle program coordinator Melanie Stadler tells Florida Today that the loggerhead and green turtles are 1 month or 2 months old. The turtles had been feeding on sargassum seaweed about 30 miles off the Brevard County coast when large swells generated by the hurricane pushed them back to the beach.

Stadler says the turtles have been washing ashore since early last week. They're eating fingernail-sized shrimp bits in tanks at the zoo's turtle rehabilitation center that opened in 2014.

Stadler says the Volusia Marine Science Center also is caring for up to 500 sea turtles washed ashore by Nicole's waves.
