Burgess Breaks Bank on Way Out of Miami-Dade

Former county manager makes out with generous severance package

Miami-Dade’s outgoing county manager is getting a whopper of a deal as he walks out the door of county hall –- to the tune of more than $250,000.

NBC Miami has obtained the four-page employment agreement between the county and George Burgess, who resigned as county manager Wednesday.

According to the agreement, Miami-Dade will pay Burgess one year’s worth of salary and benefits. His annual base salary is at least $185,000.

He is also entitled to $36,000 in expense account payments.  His car allowance adds an additional $7,000.  Total cash package: about $228,000.

The county will also pay Burgess's family’s health and life insurance expenses for one year.

County officials haven't divulged details of Mayor Carlos Alvarez's severance package. Before becoming mayor, he spent many years with the county police department, eventually ranking all the way up to the title of Director.

"It’s a sad day for me but I’m also relieved," Alvarez said on the day after the landslide election to recall him from office. "It’s been very difficult the last couple of years for me and for my family."

Burgess, a close ally of the mayor, resigned hours after the election.
