Criminal Charges Dropped Against Palm Beach Doctor Accused of Fondling Patients

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect the latest developments in the criminal and civil cases.

Prosecutors didn’t move forward in the 2015 case against a South Florida doctor accused of fondling female patients and other women.

Dr. Manuel Abreu, 45, was charged with simple battery of a patient, who claimed he inappropriately touched her following a surgical procedure in Palm Beach County last year. He pleaded not guilty.

"Although there was probable cause for the arrest and charge of the defendant, the available evidence cannot prove all legally required elements of the crime alleged and is insufficient to support a criminal prosecution," Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg wrote in the documents.

Attorneys for Abreu said he has maintained his innocence at all times.

"Dr. Abreu has always had faith in the judicial process and has always been confident that justice would prevail. He is grateful that all charges against him have been dismissed and that he has been vindicated," attorney Walter Reynoso told NBC6 following the prosecutors’ decision. "He is also thankful to his wife, family and friends for their unwavering support and belief in his innocence. Dr. Abreu is happy to move forward with his life alongside his loving family."

Another patient, an employee and a pharmaceutical representative are among several women who madesimilar claims against the Delray Beach doctor in civil lawsuits. Court records show those lawsuits were eventually dismissed, after the parties settled.

In 2021, Abreu was arrested and charged with sexual battery after another patient accused him of touching her inappropriately during a medical exam. He was found not guilty.

NBC6 reached out to his most recent attorney to ask him about the outcome of the criminal and civil cases. He declined to comment.

Over the years, Dr. Abreu has denied all the allegations against him.
