Deputy Injured, Suspect Arrested in Chase: Officials

The suspect was apprehended just south of Commercial Boulevard on the southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway.

Deputies have arrested a man suspected of several Broward County burglaries that led officers on a chase along the Sawgrass Expressway Wednesday.

Officials said the chase started in Coconut Creek at about 9:17 a.m. Coral Springs Police and the Broward County Sheriff's Office were there investigating 19-year-old Steven Ferguson, who was wanted for a burglary, when Ferguson took off in a stolen rental car.

Ferguson led officers on a chase through Coconut Creek and onto the southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway. Police said he struck an officer during the pursuit, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Ferguson finally stopped after he blew a tire on the highway, just south of Commercial Boulevard. A Good Samaritan stopped to help the suspect, not knowing that he was involved in a police chase. Ferguson then tried to carjack the Good Samaritan, but the person was able to drive away.

Officers were then able to catch up with Ferguson, who was taken into custody. Deputies said a female passenger was also in the car with the suspect.

Ferguson several felony charges, including fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen property. It is unclear whether Ferguson has an attorney.

Officers are still trying to get a hold of the Good Samaritan to get more information on the suspect. They are asked to call Coral Springs Police at (954) 344-1800.
