Driver Did Whippits With Kids in Car: Cops

Keys couple charged with child neglect

Police say a Florida Keys couple who were stopped with two kids and three cans of whipped cream in their car were not on their way home to make sundaes.

Jamie Bernard, 28, and Francesca Fleming, 22, were arrested on child neglect charges Wednesday evening in Big Pine Key after police say Bernard was getting high on whippits while behind the wheel.

Dispatchers had received a call about a reckless driver inhaling gas from a whipped cream, and were able to locate the car Bernard and Fleming were in, a police report said.

When a Monroe County Sheriff's deputy approached the car, Bernard and Fleming jumped out and ignored the deputy when he told them to stop.

Police say Bernard walked over to a garbage can and disposed of the empty whipped cream cans, and then told the deputy he was "doing whippits." Police later recovered the cans, and observed they were all empty of gas.

Fleming, who told the police she is the caregiver of the two children, said she was getting a ride to the store so she could by food for the two- and five-year-olds. She also admitted to buying the whipped cream for Bernard.

A search of Fleming’s purse turned up needles and what appeared to be drug residue, the report said. To make matters worse, she told cops she was three months pregnant and an intravenous drug user.

Both children were turned over to a parent, and Bernard and Fleming were taken to jail. Both were being held without bond Thursday morning.
