On March 3, Velez was approaching a green light at the intersection of State Road 817 and Northwest 210 St. when Maria Santa Chaison turned left in front of him and caused a crash, Miami-Dade Police said. Velez was transported to Ryder Trauma Center where he later died.

Miami-Dade Police said Chaison was driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.2.

There is a warrant for her arrest and authorities believe she may have fled to Honduras.
