Former Clerk of Tiny North Florida Town Accused of Fraud

A former official in the troubled north Florida town of Hampton has been arrested on suspicion of fraud.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Tuesday arrested 59-year-old Jane Elizabeth Hall, the former town clerk in the city of about 500 people.

The move comes more than a year after Florida's auditor general found Hampton officials had violated 31 state laws, federal tax requirements and the city charter.

FDLE alleges Hall went months without depositing customer payments into the city's water fund account. FDLE says at least $19,000 was missing.

The Florida Times-Union reports that the previous audit found at least $200,000 in missing speeding ticket revenue and other questionable payments to Hall or her family members.

Hall is being held in the Bradford County jail on $35,000 bail.
