Teenage Girl Gets House Arrest After Bringing Loaded Gun to Middle School

A 13-year-old girl is facing charges after she brought a loaded gun to Carol City Middle School in Miami Gardens Wednesday, officials said.

Miami-Dade County School officials said the student was arrested before the start of the school day for possession of a weapon after she brandished the gun at two students in a threatening manner.

A quick-thinking security guard was able to confiscate the gun at the school on Northwest 188th Street, officials said.

Officials said the gun wasn't secured at the girl's home. An adult relative of the girl, 34-year-old Kerry Watkins, was also arrested and has been charged with failing to secure a weapon, officials said.

"This unfortunate situation could have been prevented if the weapon, which she brought from home, would have been properly secured," MDCPS spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego said in a statement. "We are grateful to our courageous staff who took immediate, life-saving action. We want to remind every parent and member of our community that storing firearms properly can potentially save lives. It is not only prudent, but a legal requirement."

The teen girl is charged with attempted assault with a deadly weapon. She was ordered to remain on house arrest and wear a GPS monitor until her next hearing on December 12th.
