Grinding Machine Catches Fire in Pompano Beach

Firefighters battle blaze before fire can spread to home and church

A large concrete grinding machine caught fire in a vacant field in Pompano Beach Tuesday morning, officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched around 7:30 a.m. to the field near Northwest 30th Avenue and 1st Court after reports of a large amount of black smoke in the area, Pompano Beach Fire spokeswoman Sandra King said.

When they got there, firefighters found the machine fully engulfed in flames. They were able t6o extinguish the fire before it spread to a nearby home and church, King said.

The machine received substantial damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
