Miami Man Accused of Accidentally Killing Grandmother: MDPD

A Miami man has been charged with manslaughter after police said he accidentally killed his grandmother.

Darnell Brewer, 25, was arrested earlier this week.

According to the arrest report, the alleged incident happened on July 2. It states Brewer was involved in a verbal altercation with his brother outside a residence in Doral.

The altercation escalated to a physical confrontation, according to the report.

Brewer's brother then reportedly walked away from him. That's when Brewer allegedly picked up a ceramic candle holder and threw it towards his brother's back.

The report said his brother moved out of the way and the candle holder struck his grandmother, Barbara Johnson, in the head. She was transported to the hospital.

Police said Brewer then fled the scene. However, he was located and arrested on July 12 for charges related to the incident.

The next day, police said Johnson died at the hospital and homicide detectives took over the case.

An autopsy determined Johnson's cause of death was respiratory and other complications associated with blunt head trauma, and the death was ruled a homicide.

It's unknown whether Brewer has an attorney.
