Miami Mayor's 2009 Campaign Contributions Investigated

Tomás Regalado Could Faces Civil Penalties

Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado acknowledged that his 2009 campaign finances were under investigation by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and that there were some discrepancies found, reported the Miami Herald.

Regalado gave testimony to authorities and said they let him know that there were problems with how some contributions were documented, but not that any money was stolen, the report explained.

“The good thing that came out of that conversation was that they told me that, in their final report, it’s going to say no money is missing,” he told the Herald.

Specifically, the irregularities included $40,000 that showed up in campaign accounts after the deadline for contributions and $8,000 in illegal contributions from the Dominican Republic, the Herald reported.

Ed Griffith, a spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office, said he would not comment on any ongoing investigation and would not say when give a possible conclusion date.  Calls to Joe Centorino, executive director of the Miami-Dade Ethics Commission which is also involved in the investigation, were not immediately returned.

Calls to Regalado’s office seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The report said Regalado would likely face ethics violation and civil penalties as a result of the investigation.
